Things that Suck: Talking on a Cellphone at the Gym

Isn’t there any time/place that is immune to cellphone use? A few weeks back I noticed a particular person at the gym I go to running on the treadmill in front of me. The guy was running TOP SPEED on the treadmill and seemed to be getting a good workout… until his cellphone started vibrating. He literally hopped onto the sides of the treadmill and answered his phone at probably one of the loudest indoor voices I’ve heard in quite some time. Here’s my account of his conversation…

tool-belt: Hey, yah.. what? what.. no wait, hey, listen.. I speak up, I’m at the gym.. THE GYM, yeah.. na it’s ok… what.. na… what? na.. na.. just treadmilling

he actually did say “treadmilling”.. I liked that part

Na bro, na, na man I told you I’m at the gym… HAHAHAHAHAHA

his laugh was ridiculous… lasted like 20 seconds.. mind you, I had headphones plugged into the machine I was at but I muted it so I could hear this turd speak.. his laugh literally caught the attention of 5-10 surrounding people

Dude! I told you she’s a ho, yah.. fo sho.. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ok man honestly I can’t really talk right now cuz I’m almost done with the mill, ok, yah , beers, ok , yah, shots shots shots yah hahah HAHAHAHAHAHA.. ok bro yah peace

Now, most of that was pretty accurate, and you may ask how I remember this? Well, pretty simply put, it was loud, and I was curious. I was curious why someone would answer their phone in the middle of a workout, especially while RUNNING. On top of that, I was wanting to justify this guy and his conversation. I was hoping that this guy had a business call because at least in my mind I could justify it being of monetary value. I could feel that at least he was someone important that had to have his phone on him during a 30 min workout session and actually answer it. I wanted to vindicate him of being a complete jackass, but it didn’t happen.

I’m not someone who really cares about a lot of random rude things but talking on a cellphone at the gym is pretty annoying. If you’re going to do it (even when there are flyers posted everywhere saying not to) then at least have the common courtesy to do it away from other gym-goers. At least go into the locker room or outside. Don’t break mid-stride to answer a call from Jimbo or lay down on the bench seat and text 30 people about tonight’s plans. We don’t care, we think you’re a tool and you pretty much have no reason for even coming to the gym.

  1. This is why I deny calls and send a text saying Im at the gym. I hate people on the phone at the gym.

  2. I actually just don’t bring my phone into the gym. I was using it for a bit for music, but then realized it’s stupid and now just bring in an ipod nano..
